Blue cards for residential facilities
You need a blue card if you work or volunteer in:
- a residential facility
- a child accommodation service funded by the Australian Government or by the Department of Education.
This is an environment-based category.
This means you may need a blue card because of where you work or volunteer.
You need a blue card if children are there when you work or volunteer at the facility.
Residential facilities may include:
- youth housing
- youth shelters
- housing for children who can live on their own
- emergency housing for children
- housing that helps children return to the community
- public and community housing for children.
Employees and volunteers
You need a blue card if your work or volunteer in a residential facility while children are there.
A blue card is needed if you:
- work in youth housing
- volunteer in a youth shelter
- provide services in housing for children
- enter emergency housing for children
- work in housing that helps children return to the community
- work in public or community housing for children
- enter housing funded by the Australian Government for children
- enter housing for children under the care of Child Safety.
A blue card is not needed under this category if you:
- enter a residential facility when no children are there
- do maintenance or repair work when no children are there.
Licensed care service
You do not need a blue card under this category if you are working for a licensed care service.
A licensed care service looks after children in the care of Child Safety.
The service must have a license to provide this care.
