Blue cards for private teaching, coaching or tutoring

You need a blue card if you teach, coach or tutor children on a commercial basis.

You do not need a blue card or exemption card if you provide these services through an education provider, such as a university, TAFE or registered training organisation (RTO).

Employees and volunteers

You need a blue card if your paid role includes teaching, coaching or tutoring one or more children on a commercial basis.

You do not need a blue card if you are a volunteer and do not received payment or another reward.

You need a blue card if you are:

  • a private tutor teaching school students
  • a personal trainer providing coaching to children
  • a driving instructor teaching children
  • a language teacher giving private lessons to children
  • a music teacher giving lessons to children.

You do not need a blue card if you are:

Education providers

You do not need a blue card under this category if you work for an education provider.

This includes:

  • universities
  • TAFE
  • RTOs.
