Exemption cards for Queensland Police officers
If you work for the Queensland Police Service (QPS), you do not need a blue card or exemption card when you are doing your normal police work.
This applies when you are working in your professional role under the Police Service Administration Act 1990.
If you work with children outside your normal police duties, you may need blue card or exemption card.
An exemption card is a type of blue card. It is only available to sworn police officers and Queensland registered teachers.
When you do not need a blue card or exemption card
You do not need a blue card or exemption card if you are:
- a sworn police officer who patrols the streets and talks to a child
- a sworn police officer working at a PCYC
- a police liaison officer who supports children as part of a community program.
When you need a blue card or exemption card
You need an exemption card if you are a:
- sworn police officer who coaches children at a local sports club on weekends.
You need a blue card if you are a:
- police liaison officer who also teaches junior classes.
Applying for an exemption card
Police officers can apply for an exemption card online.
You can apply using a paper form by filling in an:
- exemption card application
- exemption card application or renewal for disability service workers
- exemption card business application .
Police officers can start regulated child-related work after they have:
- applied for an exemption card
- been linked to an organisation.
When Blue Card Services receives an application, it will check with QPS that the applicant is a police officer.
Blue Card Services will also check if more screening is needed.
