Blue cards for community playgroups
Playgroups can bring together children, parents, carers and older people through shared play.
Playgroups may be delivered through community organisations, education and care services, aged care facilities and other community settings.
Whether a blue card is needed depends on:
- where the activities take place
- the services being provided
- whether a regulated child-related activity is being conducted.
When a blue card may be needed
A blue card may be needed if:
- activities take place in a kindergarten, childcare centre or other education and care service
- services or activities are mainly directed towards children
- a regulated child-related service is being provided as part of the playgroup.
Examples
A blue card is needed for:
- an adult who takes part in an intergenerational playgroup at a kindergarten or childcare centre under the education and care services category
- a facilitator or coordinator who runs activities or programs for children through a playgroup for an organisation under the churches, clubs and associations category
- a facilitator who coordinates a mums and bubs or parent-and-child playgroup through a community organisation, church or playgroup association under the churches, clubs and associations category.
When a blue card is not needed
A blue card is not needed for:
- parents, grandparents or carers attending a playgroup with children in their care
- residents who take part in an intergenerational playgroup at an aged care facility, retirement living community or public space, such as a park.
- family arrangements, such as grandparents caring for their own grandchildren.
