Blue Cards for overnight camps
You need a blue card if your work, volunteer or business activities include providing services or activities to children at an overnight camp.
This includes school or youth camps, overnight excursions and overnight sporting tournaments.
Overnight camps and excursions are captured under the child accommodation services category.
Workers and volunteers
You need a blue card if your role includes providing services or activities at an overnight camp or excursion.
Examples
A blue card is needed for:
- coordinators at overnight camps
- volunteers helping at overnight school camps
- parents attending at an overnight camp as volunteers
- sports coaches accompanying children to an overnight training camp or competition
- chefs, cleaner or other workers who stay onsite overnight
- workers or volunteers bringing children from other states to Queensland on overnight excursions.
A blue card is not needed for:
- student attending or participating in their own school camp
- tradespeople, maintenance workers or contractors whose role:
- Is limited to maintaining, repairing or operating the site
- Does not involve staying overnight
- Only permits incidental contact with children.
Parent volunteers
The volunteer parent exemption does not apply to overnight camps or excursions.
Parents attending an overnight camp or excursion must hold a blue card.
Business owners and operators
You need a blue card if you operate an overnight camp or your business provides services or activities to children at an overnight camp or excursion.
Examples
A blue card is needed if you:
- operate a school camp
- provide activities to children at an overnight camp
- operate camps or accommodation services for junior sporting teams.
A blue card is not needed if you:
- provide maintenance or repair services only
- operate camps or team-building events only for adults
- operate accommodation that is available to the general public and not specifically for children.
Business owners and operators
You must have a blue card if you operate an overnight camp or if the usual activities of your business include providing services to children at an overnight camp or excursion.
However, if you are a business owner or operator a blue card is not needed if your business activities are limited to maintenance and repair of the site, which does not involve staying overnight, and does not permit more than incidental contact with children.
Examples
A blue card is needed for a business owner or executive who:
- operates a school camp
- provides team building or other activities to overnight camps involving children
- operates camps or accommodation services targeted towards junior sporting teams.
