Closing down a charity
If you no longer want to operate as a charity or conduct charitable fundraising, you must cancel your registration.
Send us:
- a statutory declaration, signed by the association's secretary, stating that the charity no longer exists
- a copy of the resolution or minutes from the meeting where the governing body decided to cancel its registration as a charity, certified as accurate by 2 members of the governing body
- your original certificate of registration (if lost or destroyed, a statutory declaration signed by the association’s secretary explaining this)
- your final audited financial statements.
We will send you a letter confirming the cancellation once it is processed.
If your organisation is also an incorporated association, and no longer wishes to operate, you also need to follow the steps to close down an incorporated association.
Apply to cancel charity registration
You can cancel your charity registration but continue to operate as an organisation. If you do this, you can no longer fundraise in Queensland.
Send us:
- a statutory declaration stating that your association no longer does fundraising and signed by the association’s secretary
- a copy of the resolution or minutes from the meeting where the governing body decided to cancel its registration as a charity, certified as accurate by 2 members of the governing body
- your original certificate of registration (if lost or destroyed, a statutory declaration signed by the association’s secretary explaining this)
- a statement of how you intend to continue to operate without fundraising
- your last audited financial statements.
We will send you a letter confirming the cancellation once it is processed.
Apply to have a charity deregistered
Anyone can apply to have an existing charity deregistered.
A charity may be cancelled on the grounds that:
- the charity is not operated in good faith
- a charity already exists for the same purpose
- the charity is not well administered
- an inappropriate person is connected to the charity.
To seek cancellation of a charity registration, you must:
- complete and lodge the application for removal form with us
- send a copy of the form to the organisation within 7 days of submitting it to us (we recommend using registered mail)
- prove to us that you have given a copy to the organisation.
Charities removed from the register
The following charities have been removed from the register of charities. Charities that have been removed will be published here for 1 month.
