Maintenance staff at your home

Information for Queensland public housing tenants

Before maintenance staff visit

Maintenance staff will always try to contact you before carrying out any maintenance work on your property.

They will usually:

  • call you to arrange a time to attend
  • explain what work they are coming to do.

For routine maintenance, staff will not enter your home unless an adult is there.

If you cannot be home at the agreed time, you must arrange for another adult to be there. If no adult is home, the work will be delayed and staff will leave a card with details of who to contact to arrange another visit.

When staff can enter your home without permission

Maintenance staff can enter your property without your permission only if there is an emergency, such as:

  • a fire
  • a serious water or gas leak
  • storm or flood damage.

If maintenance staff cause any damage while accessing your home in an emergency (for example breaking a door or window), we will repair this damage at no cost to you.

Your responsibilities during a visit

To help keep everyone safe and to protect your belongings:

  • do not leave keys outside the property (for example under mats or pot plants)
  • secure all dogs when staff visit your property
  • keep children and pets away from the maintenance work
  • move any personal items or belongings away from the work area so they are not damaged.

You must allow us access for inspections and repairs. We will always give you the notice required by law, except in an emergency.

How maintenance staff will work

Maintenance staff are responsible for carrying out their work in a safe, tidy and efficient way.

They may need to:

  • use your electricity
  • make some noise while working, for example from machinery and tools.

If you have concerns about the way work is carried out, contact your Housing Service Centre.
