Harvesting licence (other protected animals)

What this licence allows

Queensland’s native animals are protected by the Nature Conservation Act 1992 (the Act). A harvesting licence (protected animals) allows a person to take animals from the wild for approved purposes.

This licence may authorise you to:

• harvest live animals from the wild
• harvest animal parts or products
• harvest eggs (other than crocodile eggs).

Animals not covered by this licence

Commercial macropods

If you intend to commercially harvest macropods (red kangaroo (Osphranter rufus), common wallaroo (Osphranter robustus) and eastern grey kangaroo (Macropus giganteus) for meat and skin, refer to Harvesting of macropods.

Harvesting crocodile eggs

If your activity involves the harvest of crocodile eggs refer to Crocodile egg harvesting.

Animals covered by this licence

You can apply for this licence if you intend to harvest:

Spiders and scorpions

• live spiders from the family Theraphosidae
• scorpions from the genus Urodacus.

Venomous snakes for venom extraction

• Venomous snakes taken from the wild for venom extraction.

Other protected animals

• live protected animals taken from the wild.

Important: Conservation value may be payable for each animal taken from the wild where an exemption does not apply. View the Nature Conservation (Animals) Regulation 2020.

Before you apply

Before lodging your application, make sure you have:

• identified the animals you want to harvest and applicable permit
• considered where harvesting will occur
• obtained landholder consent if required
• gathered any relevant qualifications, certifications or supporting information.

What you need to include in your application

Which wildlife will be taken?

Provide details about:

• the species and the number of animals you want to take
• how you will identify the species
• your knowledge and experience harvesting these animals
• how animals will be captured, handled and transported safely
• any relevant qualifications or certifications (for example, venomous snake handling)
• what will happen to the animals after harvest (for example, sold directly to pet shops, sold online or transferred to your Advanced licence).

Landholder consent

If you are not the landholder, include a signed statement from the landholder allowing harvesting on their property.

Reporting obligations

Licence holders must:

• keep records of harvesting activities
• submit a return of operations every three months and within 10 business days after the permit expires (even for NIL returns)
• maintain records that support submitted returns.

Returns can be submitted through Online Services or by downloading the return form and emailing it to wildlife.operations@detsi.qld.gov.au
