Guidance officers
Guidance officers are key players in helping all students and their families get the most out of their school years. They help with career planning, but can also provide advice about support programs and access to helpful resources.
Guidance officers:
- provide guidance and counselling services to students and their families to help guide students' personal and social development
- identify individual's barriers to learning and help plan support programs
- provide advice about education and career pathways, and can help define and coordinate a career pathway.

Find out about different careers:
- myfuture—a joint initiative of the Australian, state and territory governments. It includes an extensive resource centre and career planner. You can build a profile of yourself, leading to suggested career paths.
- Skillsroad—allows you to build a profile of yourself and create a career path report.
- School subjects you like and jobs they can lead to (Australian Government)
- Job Guide—an Australian Government tool that lists the tasks performed in professions and gives other career help.
- Contact industry associations—Talk to people in the jobs and industries that you are interested in.

Work experience
Work experience:
- helps you to decide if you like a particular career
- proves to future employers that you are interested in their company or industry.
Most high schools organise work experience programs for students.
These programs provide a formal, controlled arrangement for students to gain some workplace experience.
