Transport to medical services
If you live in a remote Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander community your local health worker may be able to tell you how to travel to medical services.
Queensland Ambulance Service
The Queensland Ambulance Service provides non-emergency patient transport for:
- pre-arranged visits to a medical centre if you need ongoing treatment
- transfers between medical centres if you are having specialist treatment.
For non-emergency medical transport an authorisation certificate from a doctor is needed.
The Queensland Ambulance Service needs at least 24 hours notice for bookings.

Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme
Queensland's Patient Travel Subsidy Scheme provides financial assistance for transport and accommodation when you have to travel to specialist services that are more than 50 kilometres from your local hospital. To access the scheme you will need a doctor's referral to a specialist health service.
