Child restraints

It is unlawful to travel in a vehicle and not be restrained.

When driving with children up to 7 years of age, you must ensure they are restrained in a properly fastened and adjusted Australian Standard (AS) approved child restraint.

Driving includes when the vehicle is moving or stationary, for example when stopped at traffic lights, but not when parked.

Only child restraints that carry the AS sticker have been tested and approved as meeting standard AS/NZS1754.

Kidsafe Australia is an independent, charitable organisation dedicated to the prevention of unintentional death and serious injury to children aged 0 to 15 years. Baby capsule and restraint hire

Kidsafe Queensland Inc also has baby capsules and child car restraints for hire, and they can fit and check child restraints for safety. Bookings are essential. For information about service locations across Queensland, phone Kidsafe on (07) 3854 1829 or visit their website.

Alternatively, contact your Child Safety Service Centre or foster and kinship carer service, who may have baby capsules and booster seats available for you to borrow.

Learner driver licence

To get a learner car (C class) licence in Queensland, a young person’s first step is to complete PrepL or the written road rules test.

Once a young person has passed PrepL or the written road rules test, and are at least 16 years old, they can apply for their learner licence.
