Buy Smart Competition 2023 closed

Students around the state were invited to enter the Buy Smart Competition and had a chance to win a share of more than $15,000 in prizes. While taking part students learned how to stay safe from scams, understand managing money, and gain more knowledge about their rights and responsibilities as consumers.

To enter, students in Years 4 to 12 had to get creative and develop a project that:

  • identified an important issue related to shopping or money
  • explained the issue to a target audience of your choice
  • gave some helpful hints and tips to help them with this issue.

The 2023 Buy Smart Competition closed on Friday15 September.

There’s lots of helpful information for students to help them understand what’s required, including entry hints and tips, advice on researching your topics, and YouTube videos for different age groups. There’s a special section of resources just for teachers too.

Buy Smart in the classroom

The wider Buy Smart Program has been aligned to the Australian Curriculum and Senior Syllabus, meaning that competition entries can be used as assessment pieces. This, along with downloadable teacher kits, lesson plans, and curriculum maps, allows for Buy Smart to be easily incorporated into Queensland classrooms.

Officers from the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) are also available to help teachers develop their students’ consumer and financial literacy through free, engaging classroom presentations. Find out how to arrange a free presentation for your school or club.
