Buy Smart Competition winners announced

On Thursday 27 October, the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) announced the winners of the 2022 Buy Smart Competition during a ceremony at Parliament House.

The annual Buy Smart Competition encourages Queensland students to become smart consumers by sparking classroom conversations of consumer and financial issues such as scam awareness, consumer rights and understanding money.

This year, more than 5,800 students joined in on the fun of the Buy Smart Program through presentations, classroom activities and the competition. Outstanding entries included an anime, a rock garden, a ‘snap’-style card game and a scam safety magazine for over-65s.

The winning entries in each category were from the following schools:

  • Years 4–6: Wellers Hill State School
  • Years 7–9: Wavell State High School
  • Years 10–12: Nambour State College.

Over $15,000 was awarded in prizes to the winners and their schools, including a $1,500 Commissioner’s School Champion prize, which was shared between Forest Lake State School and Wadja Wadja High School.

From Forest Lake State School’s twice-weekly ‘Buy Smart Club’ to Wadja Wadja High School’s enthusiastic participation in Buy Smart classroom presentations across Years 7 to 12, these champion schools have embraced the important learnings of the Buy Smart Program.

Congratulations to all winners and highly commended entrants.

Buy Smart presentations

The wider Buy Smart Program has been aligned to the Australian Curriculum and Senior Syllabus, meaning that competition entries can be used as assessment pieces. This, along with downloadable teacher kits, lesson plans, and curriculum maps, allows for Buy Smart to be easily incorporated into Queensland classrooms.

Officers from the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) are also available to help teachers develop their students’ consumer and financial literacy through free, engaging classroom presentations. Find out how to arrange a free presentation for your school or club.
