Students learning to Buy Smart in 2020

The annual Buy Smart Competition encourages Queensland students to become smart consumers by sparking classroom conversations of consumer and financial issues such as scam awareness, consumer rights and understanding money.

With over $15,000 in cash prizes for entrants and their schools, the competition asks students in Years 4 to 12 to get creative and develop a project that:

  • identifies an important issue related to shopping or money
  • explains the issue to a target audience of your choice
  • gives some helpful hints and tips to help them with this issue.

Entries are open until 5pm, Friday 18 September 2020.

Buy Smart presentations

The wider Buy Smart Program has been aligned to the Australian Curriculum, meaning that competition entries can be used as assessment pieces. This, along with downloadable teacher kits, lesson plans, and curriculum maps , allows for Buy Smart to be easily incorporated into Queensland classrooms.

Officers from the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) are also available to assist teachers inform students about being savvy consumers by visiting schools and giving engaging presentations. Find out how to arrange a free presentation for your school or club.
