Getting there

By car

Planning and preparing for your trip is the best way to ensure your safety and the safety of other drivers on the road. Whether you are driving a short distance or taking a driving holiday there are a few things you should do to ensure you travel as safely as possible.

To stay safe on the road:

  • plan ahead
  • be prepared
  • check that everything is okay with your vehicle, as well as anything you are towing like a trailer, caravan or boat
  • share the driving if possible
  • as soon as you feel tired, stop and have a break
  • every 2 hours, stop for a 15-minute break
  • don’t drive more than 10 hours in a day
  • avoid any alcohol the night before your trip
  • be aware of the alcohol content of any drinks to ensure you stay below the legal limit
  • always wear a seatbelt.
