Types of schools and services offered

Distance education

Parents can enrol their child in a school of distance education. There are eligibility criteria and in some cases fees may be charged for this service. With distance education:

  • school curriculum programs are provided for students
  • teachers help monitor the child's learning and report on progress (as in state schools)
  • the parent is the home tutor.

Home education

Parents who register their child for home education are required to:

  • accept legal responsibility for their child's education
  • provide a high-quality education for their child
  • provide a suitable learning environment in the home.

Parents can choose to educate their child themselves or enlist a registered teacher.

Before- and after-school care

Outside school hours care (OSHC) and school holiday programs are often run at schools.
