Costs and financial help

Tertiary study costs will vary depending on the type and length of your course and where you study.

Financial help may be available to:

  • subsidise your tuition fees (such as HECS-HELP)
  • help with living expenses (such as Youth Allowance).

Scholarships may also be available.

Universities

If you study at a Queensland public university or an approved higher education provider you will be offered either a:

  • Commonwealth-supported place where the Australian Government pays for part of your costs and you pay a student contribution

    or

  • full-fee-paying place.

Whichever place you get, you may be eligible for financial help with the cost of studying.

Government support includes:

International students may be eligible for Commonwealth assistance.

Scholarships

University scholarships may help you with study costs. Some universities and other organisations offer their own scholarships.

The Good University Guide allows you to search for scholarships in your area of study.

Vocational education and training (VET)

Help with tuition fees could be available if you are studying:

TAFE Queensland offers both government-funded and full-fee-paying courses. Costs will vary depending on the course you select. You may have to pay for books and materials as well as course fees.

Some TAFE institutes offer scholarships and bursaries for current and new students. Check with your nearest campus.

A time to pay plan and student concessions are offered at some TAFE institutes.

Government support for all tertiary students

Study Assist is a guide to government help through income support programs like:
  • Austudy
  • Youth Allowance
  • ABSTUDY (for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students).

Payments for these programs are made through Centrelink.
