Supervising registered training organisation responsibilities
Supervising registered training organisations (or SRTOs) are registered training organisations who deliver training and assessment services to an apprentice or trainee under a training contract.
SRTOs also work with employers and apprentices or trainees to develop a training plan and will issue a qualification on successful completion of the apprenticeship or traineeship—therefore every apprenticeship and traineeship must have an SRTO.
The following SRTO responsibilities relate to the entire apprenticeship or traineeship duration—from initial sign-up to completion.
Before training starts
SRTOs need to:
- provide information on the rights and responsibilities of the employer and the apprentice or trainee
- advise on the costs of training and any funding provided by the government that would help cover these costs
- assess the employer to make sure they have the capacity to train the apprentice or trainee
- negotiate with the employer and the apprentice or trainee to develop a training plan
- where the apprentice or trainee is school-based, organise the development of a schedule of education, training and employment with all appropriate parties, to ensure the apprenticeship or traineeship impacts on the school timetable
- work with the employer and the apprentice or trainee to provide the facilities, services, supervision and training required under the training plan
- give the apprentice or trainee and the employer a copy of the signed training plan
- provide a method to record what training has been delivered (which can be either a printed book or an electronic method) that allows for monitoring of the apprentice or trainee’s progress.
During training
SRTOs need to:
- ensure the training is delivered as agreed
- help the apprentice or trainee and the employer to make sure the training is completed on schedule
- make regular contact to monitor the apprentice or trainee's progress
- provide additional learning support if required.
After completion
SRTOs need to:
- make sure the actual completion date is agreed to by the employer and apprentice or trainee
- make sure the completion agreement is signed to acknowledge the completion of training
- issue the qualification
- advise the Department of Education, Training and Employment; and the employer that the qualification has been issued (within 14 days of issuing the qualification).
If the SRTO is replaced
If an employer provides written advice that the SRTO is to be replaced, the SRTO being replaced must provide a statement of attainment to the apprentice or trainee, which confirms the training completed under the training plan up to the replacement day.
