Preparation for training

When you have agreed to deliver training, you will need to help the apprentice or trainee and their employer to prepare for it.

Employer resource assessment

You must assess the employer's training resources to ensure the facilities, range of work, supervision and training is adequate for the apprentice or trainee to achieve the outcomes of their training plan.

The employer resource assessment form will let you do this. You will need to keep this form as a record of the assessment:

Induction information

Before training starts, you must conduct an induction for the apprentice or trainee and their employer.

The induction must include:

  • the rights and responsibilities of all parties to the apprenticeship or traineeship
  • training organisation grievance procedures and avenues to appeal assessment
  • information about training costs including
    • training delivery costs
    • tuition fees
    • student services fees
    • other fees
    • any government funding available to help cover these costs (such as User Choice funding).

An induction information guide for supervising registered training organisations will help you deliver the induction.

The training plan

The training plan outlines the training to be delivered to the apprentice or trainee by you and the employer. You must negotiate its development with the employer and the apprentice or trainee.

You must take all reasonable steps to ensure that the training plan is negotiated and signed during the probationary period.

While there is no set format, an example of a training plan is available.

The training record

The training record must be provided to the apprentice or trainee within 14 days of the training plan being signed. It documents their progress and achievement of competencies outlined in the training plan.

There is no set format for a training record—it may be kept in any way considered appropriate. For example, the training record may be kept in booklet form or in an electronic format.

The apprentice or trainee is responsible for looking after the training record and must make it available for inspection or updating when required by you or the employer.

You and the employer must update and sign the training record at least every 3 months.
