Making a complaint

You can make a complaint when there is something you are concerned or unhappy about. Some things you may have concerns or be unhappy about are:

  • your health
  • where you live
  • your carer
  • your safety
  • friends or family
  • school
  • decisions that have been made about you
  • Child Safety decisions or behaviour of a Child Safety Officer.

How to make a complaint

  1. Talk to your Child Safety Officer (CSO).
  2. If you still have concerns, or the complaint is about the CSO, talk to your Community Visitor. They will try to work out a solution with your CSO and carer, or they may decide to discuss your concerns with the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG), who will then contact Child Safety to ask them what is being done to help you. You can phone the OPG on 1800 661 533 (free call).
  3. If this doesn’t fix or change things, you can talk to the Team Leader or Manager of your Child Safety Service Centre.
  4. If you still have concerns, ask to speak to the Client Relations Officer at your regional office. You can ask your CSO or Community Visitor for the contact phone number for your regional office.
  5. Finally, if you still think things are not how you would like them to be, contact the Central Complaints and Review Unit on 1800 080 464 (free call).
  6. If you still have concerns after talking to all these people, you can talk to the Queensland Civil and Administrative Tribunal. The Tribunal can help you if Child Safety has made a decision that you do not agree with about things like:
    - who you should live with
    - whether your parents should know where you are living
    - the amount of contact you can have with your family.

If you want the Tribunal to review any of these decisions, you have 28 days to contact them from the time Child Safety sends you a letter about the decision. You can phone the Tribunal on (07) 3225 8346 or 1300 753 228 (if you live outside Brisbane).
