Restricted driver authorisation

The Transport Operations (Passenger Transport) Act 1994 requires all drivers of community and courtesy services to be appropriately authorised—unless specifically exempted.

Community and courtesy operators can either:

  • use drivers who hold a driver authorisation issued by the department
  • issue restricted driver authorisation themselves—if the driver meets certain conditions.

For more information on applying for restricted driver authorisation (drivers) refer to PT305 – Restricted Driver Authorisation for drivers, or issuing restricted driver authorisation (operators) refer to PT206 – Operators issuing Restricted Driver Authorisation, including the requirements to be met before a restricted driver authorisation may be issued.
