Identifying your vehicle

Taxi, limousine and ride-booking vehicle identification and signage will not only help passengers safely identify their booked hire vehicle, they also assist the Department of Transport and Main Roads compliance officers and the Queensland Police Service to perform their duties.

Taxi Identification

Taxis can be identified by a distinctive registration plate:

  • T + 5 numbers (maroon and white colours).

Limousine Identification

Limousines can be identified by a distinctive registration plate:

  • Limousines: ‘L’ + 5 numbers + ‘Queensland Limousine’ (maroon and white colours)
  • Special purpose limousines: 'SL' + 2 numbers + 2 letters + ‘Queensland Limousine’ (maroon and white colours).

Ride-booking Identification

Unlike taxis and limousines, ride-booking vehicles do not have distinctive number plates to aid in identification.  Instead, vehicles used for ride-booking services (excluding taxi and limousines) must display an identification sign, approved by the Department of Transport and Main Roads (TMR).

You can contact your ride-booking company if you would like to see their approved vehicle signs.

Ride-booking vehicles must display signs in 2 locations:

  • front windscreen: on the bottom right-hand side when viewing the vehicle from the front
  • rear windscreen: on the bottom left-hand side when viewing the rear of your vehicle.

Signs are mandatory when providing ride-booking services. Drivers must remove all ride-booking vehicle signs when not in service or when the vehicle is being used for personal use. There are penalties for drivers who do not correctly display these signs.
