PrepL online learning and assessment
Before you can apply for a car (C class) learner licence in Queensland, you will need to successfully complete PrepL.
You can enrol in PrepL if you are at least 15 years and 11 months old. This will give you time to work through PrepL, so that you will be eligible to get your learner licence on your 16th birthday.
You will be able to do PrepL at your own pace, any time, using a compatible smartphone, tablet or computer.
A download speed of 1.5mbps is required for PrepL to work on any device and you will need to allow 1.5GB to download the whole course. The content will download as you progress through the PrepL course.
PrepL cost
PrepL costs the same as the written road rules test. You only have to pay the fee once and will have access to the course for 12 months.
If you don’t pass the final test on your first go, you will need to wait 24 hours before you can have another attempt. You don’t have to pay another fee to re-attempt.
You can still access the rest of PrepL during this time, so you can refresh your knowledge and brush up on the questions you didn’t get right.
If your enrolment is cancelled due to another person completing the course for you, they may receive a penalty of more than $6,100 and you won’t be able to re-enrol for 6 months.

Completing PrepL
PrepL will take around 4-6 hours to complete. You will have 12 months to complete the course from the date of your enrolment. Assessment components are embedded in the course and unlocked through completing different learning stages.
You will first be guided through a number of interactive activities, videos and scenarios. These are split into 3 sections:
- Your driving attitude
- Signs and rules
- Sharing the road with others.
You will still be required to provide evidence of your identity before you can be issued with a class C learner licence. You can do this at any stage of your Prep L enrolment. If you do this before passing PrepL, you will be able to apply for your licence online and get it in the mail. While you wait for your licence to arrive, you can use an electronic or printed version of your driver licence receipt to immediately start supervised driving.
No access to PrepL
PrepL will replace the 30-question paper-based written road rules test for a class C learner licence. Until PrepL is made mandatory you can choose to either complete PrepL or sit a written road rules test.
Once PrepL becomes mandatory, you may be exempt from completing PrepL in certain circumstances. For example, if you don’t have internet access at home or another location like a school or a library.
