Supercharged Solar for Renters eligibility requirements

A summary of the eligibility criteria is outlined below. For comprehensive details and complete eligibility criteria, refer to the Applicant Guideline (PDF, 445.4 KB) .

Eligible applicants

To be eligible for the rebate, landlords (applicants) must:

  • live in Australia
  • own a rental property which is currently rented out, and not live in the rental property themselves
  • have tenant consent (and body corporate consent where applicable).

Further information:

  • I’m renting out the spare room of the property I’m living in – am I eligible for the rebate? No, owner-occupied properties don’t qualify for the rebate.
  • I occasionally stay in the spare room of my rental (as my secondary home) – am I eligible for the rebate? You may qualify if you can prove that your main home is elsewhere. You’d also need to satisfy all other eligibility requirements.
  • You are ineligible if your rental property is held in the name of a trust, self-managed super fund or other entity. The rental property must be owned by an individual i.e. a person, to be eligible.

Eligible rental properties

To be eligible for a rebate, the rental property must be:

  • located in Queensland
  • a Class 1a building (a house, duplex, or townhouse) or a secondary dwelling to a Class 1a building (e.g. granny flat)
  • currently rented out with an eligible tenancy agreement (lease) in place
  • rented for $1,000 or less per week
  • individually metered (have its own electricity meter).

Further information:

  • Are apartments eligible? No, apartments (or units constructed above or below another unit) are generally classified as Class 2 buildings and aren’t eligible. Find out more about building classifications.
  • How many months must be left on my tenant’s lease for it to be eligible? The lease submitted with your final approval application must be for a fixed term and have at least 8 months remaining. If your current lease has less than 8 months remaining, you can still apply for conditional approval, but you'll need to update the lease so there’s at least 8 months remaining before submitting your final application. The new lease must also meet other requirements. For full details, read the Applicant Guideline (PDF, 445.4 KB) .
  • If you own multiple rented properties, you can apply separately for rebates for up to 3 properties. Each application must be for a different street address.

Properties are ineligible if they:

  • already have a solar system installed (working or not)
  • are part of an embedded network.

Landlords with a broken solar system on their property can choose to remove it if they wish to apply for a rebate under the Supercharged Solar for Renters program.

Eligible solar systems

Safety and consumer protection for landlords and tenants is a priority for the program.

To be eligible for a rebate, the system must:

  • be supplied by a New Energy Tech Approved Seller (retailer)
  • use panels (modules) and inverters that are listed on the Clean Energy Council (CEC) Approved PV modules list and the Approved inverters list
  • have a system capacity of at least 3 kilowatts (kW)
  • have a generation signalling device (GSD), regardless of system size (capacity and kilovolt-ampere (kVA) rating)
  • be designed by a system designer accredited by Solar Accreditation Australia (SSA)
  • be installed by qualified persons holding relevant Solar Accreditation Australia accreditation, Queensland electrical contractor and worker licencing.

Installations that incorporate recycled materials will not qualify for a rebate due to the requirement to use Clean Energy Council approved products.

More information about system and installation requirements for installers is available on our program page for industry.

What is a New Energy Tech Approved Seller?

The New Energy Tech Consumer Code (NETCC) protects consumers by ensuring solar retailers meet high standards, deliver reliable products, and commit to ethical practices. It helps consumers make confident, informed choices in the growing energy market. New Energy Tech Approved Sellers have committed to abiding by the New Energy Tech Consumer Code.

Find a New Energy Tech Approved Seller using the interactive map. You can search by name or location (suburb). If searching by name, you can filter results to a state-level by searching ‘QLD’ in the search bar.

For more information and assistance with the New Energy Tech Consumer Code register, email info@newenergytech.org.au or call the New Energy Tech Consumer Code administrator on 03 9929 4195.

Other concessions and discounts

The rebate available under the Supercharged Solar for Renters program can be applied for in addition to other concessions and discounts such as the Australian Government’s Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) or Cheaper Home Batteries Program.

To participate in the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme, Clean Energy Council approved products and Solar Accreditation Australia accredited designers and installers are mandatory requirements. Find out more about installing solar that meets the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme discount requirements.

Important advice for applicants

The Queensland Government does not endorse, approve or warranty the suitability of any suppliers, installers or products. Applicants are responsible for contracting directly with the independent New Energy Tech Approved Sellers for the supply of the solar products. It is recommended that all applicants seek multiple quotes and undertake their own independent enquiries on the suitability of the approved solar suppliers and products.
