Pharmacy—medications after your transplant

You will have the opportunity to attend an information session on the medications that you will need to take after you have received your transplant. It is very important you attend 1 of these sessions, as they will help you understand the importance of medications post-transplant.

Some important points to remember about medications after your transplant:

  • Following your liver transplant, you will take a lot of new medicines. These are vital to the success of the transplant.
  • It is important you never run out of these medications and do not stop them without being advised to do so by your doctors. Stopping these medications can lead to your transplant failing.
  • You will need to pay the PBS prices for these medications. Your pharmacist can provide more information and advice around costs and access to medication as you need it.
  • Before starting any supplements or herbal medications you must check with your doctors whether these are safe. Many supplements and herbal medications can damage your liver, lead to failure of your new liver and cause many side effects.
