Mount Taylor Park remediation project
The Mount Taylor Park site was a gold mine from around 1915 through to the mid-1950s. Excavated areas and a tailings dam were progressively filled with hazardous contaminants and municipal waste as a waste disposal site until the site was redeveloped as residential land by the Logan City Council during the 1980s.
As a consequence of land contamination issues and impacts to residents, the impacted land was resumed, houses removed, and residents compensated and relocated.
In 1991, the Queensland Government and Logan City Council remediated the site through capping and landscaping the site to contain and control the underlying contaminants, enabling the site to be repurposed for use as public parkland.
The site is listed on the Environmental Management Register (EMR) for the notifiable activity of storing hazardous mine wastes due to previous gold mining activities.
