E-Bike Assurance Scheme

From 1 July 2026, e-bikes used in public in Queensland must meet the European Standard for Electrically Power-Assisted Cycles (EN 15194) or be verified by 28 February 2027 as meeting its core safety features.

The Queensland Government is creating an industry assurance scheme to check and label e‑bikes that are safe but don’t meet EN 15194. This scheme will cover:

  • e-bikes made before 1 July 2026 that meet the core safety features of EN 15194, but were not certified to that standard
  • non‑standard e‑bikes designed or modified for riders with a disability or medical condition, such as e‑trikes

If you own one of these e-bikes, you will be able to take it to an authorised verifier for inspection. If it passes, they will verify it and attach a label so you can continue using it legally in public after 28 February 2027.

It is important to note that high-powered, high-speed devices exceeding the legal requirements (250 watts maximum continuous rated power and 25 km/h of assisted speed) are illegal in Queensland and can be seized by police from 1 July 2026.

More information about the scheme will be available before 1 October 2026. As the scheme grows, this information will include:

  • which e-bikes are eligible
  • when the scheme starts
  • where to have your e-bike verified
  • how the verification process works
  • options for people who live in areas without access to a verifier.
