Locations of speed and redlight cameras
Speed and redlight camera locations are selected by assessing all Queensland roads against strict criteria including:
- the number of crashes on a section of road in the last 5 years
- the severity and causes of crashes that have occurred
- how common high risk speeding behaviour is in an area.
The Department of Transport and Main Roads and the Queensland Police Service regularly review crash history and prioritise enforcement at locations which have the highest number of crashes.
Fixed speed cameras
Fixed speed cameras are cameras that are permanently installed on roads around Queensland to make sure you drive within the speed limit.
All fixed speed camera sites have signs placed before the camera to let you know a camera is there. This sign is placed as a courtesy reminder, there is no legislative requirement for signs to be installed at camera locations.

Point-to-point speed cameras
Point-to-Point speed cameras enforce the speed limits on roads that have high volumes of traffic such as highways and motorways. Locations are selected by examining lengths of road that exhibit a significant history of speed criteria crashes in the preceding 5-year period.

Mobile speed cameras
There are up to 3,500 mobile speed camera sites located throughout Queensland. We select mobile speed camera sites based on strict criteria, with crash history being the primary reason.
Cameras are deployed to these sites randomly to increase the unpredictability of when and where they will be enforcing, encouraging motorists to follow the speed limit. Camera vehicles can also be marked (overt) or unmarked (covert) as the combination of both approaches is associated with the best road safety outcomes.
You can expect speed enforcement anywhere, anytime on Queensland roads and you must always drive within the speed limit.

Combined redlight and speed camera locations
Speed and redlight camera locations are selected by assessing all Queensland roads against strict criteria including:
- number of crashes at an intersection in the last 5 years
- causes of the crashes that have occurred at an intersection
- severity of the crashes that have occurred at an intersection.

Redlight camera locations
Evaluations of the Camera Detected Offence Programs have found that combining redlight cameras with speed cameras is more effective at reducing road trauma than redlight cameras alone. As a result of these findings, all new redlight cameras are combined with speed cameras.
All existing redlight only camera locations are currently being upgraded to combined redlight and speed cameras.
