How to order historical records

Anyone can buy a historical Queensland birth, death or marriage certificate or an image for an event that took place in Queensland. You do not have to provide proof of ID.

How to order historical certificates or images

You can order a historical certificate or image if the record has been digitised.

If an image is available, you will be given the option to add the historical image product to your shopping cart.

To order historical Queensland certificates or images online:

  1. Search the historical index to find the record you are looking for.
  2. Select 'order' on the record you want to purchase.
  3. Check the quantity of the product you want to order is correct.
  4. Read the terms and conditions.
  5. Accept the terms and conditions and order the product.
  6. Use the shopping cart to order and pay by credit card (Visa or MasterCard).

A receipt for your payment will be sent to the email address you give us in your application.

If you are not sure which result is the record you want, you can email us for help before you buy the record.

If you have ordered an image

The historical image you buy will be available for 14 days for you to view, download or print from your own computer.

We do not provide prints of images.

If you have ordered a certificate

We will print your certificate and post it to you within 10 working days. You cannot download the image of a certificate.

Checkout or edit your cart

The cart will update with your orders, the quantity ordered and the total amount you need to pay. You can edit the quantity of items in your cart.

To continue searching and buying records, select the ‘New search’ button. This will take you back to the search page.

Checkout

To finish and pay for your order, select the ‘Checkout’ button at the bottom of the cart at any time.

Follow the instructions to give us your contact and delivery details before you pay by credit card (Visa or MasterCard).

Editing your cart

To change your order, select the ‘Edit cart’ button at the bottom of the cart. This will allow you to remove items from your order or change the quantity of an item ordered.

Historical images are downloaded onto your computer so you do not need to order more than 1 of each image—make sure that you only order 1 copy of an image.

When you have finished editing your order, you can:

  • select the ‘Update’ button to get your new total cost
  • select the ‘Checkout’ button to pay
  • select the ‘Births, Deaths and Marriage Registry’ link to keep searching to find more records.

Search historical records

Applying offline

If you cannot apply for a historical certificate online, you can complete an application form to buy one.

You do not need to provide any proof of ID to apply for a historical record.

Once you have filled in a birth, death or marriage certificate application form, you will need to pay the application fee of $30.00 for a historical certificate, by post or in person.

This price includes postage for us to send your certificate to you within Australia.

After we get your application and payment, we will print your certificate and post it to you within 10 working days.

Get it right

Your historical certificate application will take longer if the application does not provide enough information and payment is not correct.

Remember to:

  • complete 1 application form for each person’s event—birth, death or marriage
  • include as much detail about the person as possible
  • calculate the return postage, if required
  • add up all fees into 1 payment
  • check your credit card details and expiry date
  • allow extra time for delivery by Australia Post.

Certificates take 5 business days—2 business days for urgent applications.

In person

Visit the Brisbane registry counter at Level 32, 180 Ann Street, Brisbane with your completed application form. Certificates will be ready after 2.30pm the next business day. Urgent certificates are ready in 3 hours (or the next business day if you apply after 1.30pm).

If you do not live in Brisbane, you can apply for a historical certificate at your nearest Queensland Magistrates Court (except the Brisbane Magistrates Court) or Queensland Government Agent Program (QGAP) office.

Please allow extra time for Australia Post to deliver your historical certificate to your address.

Pay the fee

You will need to work out the total cost of your order and make sure to pay the correct amount.
You can pay:

  • at the counter
    • by EFTPOS or credit card
    • with cash
    • with a business account cheque
    • with a bank cheque
    • with a money order
  • through the mail
    • by credit card
    • with a business account cheque
    • with a bank cheque
    • with a money order.

Make cheques and money orders payable to 'Registry of Births, Deaths and Marriages'.

We do not accept personal cheques.

Content of historical certificates and images

The historical certificate or image you buy will show the following information about the registration.

Birth registrations:

  • Registration number (including registration year)
  • First names
  • Last name
  • Father’s name
  • Mother’s name

Marriage registrations:

  • Registration number (including registration year)
  • Last name of each party
  • First names of each party

Death registrations:

  • Registration number (including registration year)
  • First names
  • Last name
  • Father’s name
  • Mother’s name

The information shown on a historical certificate and the information needed to register an event may vary.

Correct a historical certificate

Historical records show information that was correct at the time of the event and the information held in our historical records cannot be changed.

If you think information on a certificate or image is incorrect, we can review the record to find out if the error occurred in transcription or when the information was provided at the time of registering the event.

To correct a certificate, request a review of the certificate.

How to get a refund

You need to carefully research and make sure that you order the correct historical record.

Complete our online refund request form to get a refund for a historical Queensland certificate or image.

We will review your request and reply to you by email. Online requests are replied to within 7 business days.
