Student Opportunities

If you are currently enrolled as a university student, you can register under 'Student opportunities registration' on the Graduate Portal to be considered for the following Queensland Government opportunities:

  • scholarships
  • vacation employment
  • cadetships
  • industry placements
  • work experience.

If you are due to finish your university qualification this year, check out the graduate opportunities.

Scholarships

Scholarships provide current undergraduate students with paid work placements and financial assistance to support their studies and early careers. A scholarship with the Queensland Government may include:

  • financial assistance
  • paid work placement during the scholarship
  • practical on-the-job training in your area of study
  • placement in one of our graduate programs which may lead to a permanent job.

Vacation employment

Vacation employment is a formal program that provides university undergraduate students with paid experience in their field of study. Placements can occur during the mid-year or summer semester break, on a paid basis.

Vacation employment with the Queensland Government helps you to:

  • gain valuable hands-on experience while you study
  • have a competitive CV that stands out from your peers
  • build strong networks within your chosen profession.

Industry placements

Industry placements (also known as internships) are usually compulsory as part of the completion of your degree. Either the university or the employer can initiate the placement. There is usually a selection process to award placements to students and each placement can be on a paid or unpaid basis.

These industry placements are not open to graduate or student nurses and midwives - contact your local Hospital and Health Service about opportunities while studying.

Departments conduct their own recruitment process and applications can open at any time of the year. Departmental websites contain the most up-to-date information on available opportunities and closing dates.

Industry placements with the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection.

Work experience

Work experience is unpaid, on-the-job learning for a short period — no longer than 30 working days.

Work experience with the Queensland Government helps you to:

  • gain valuable hands-on experience while you study
  • get a head start and help make your CV stand out from your peers
  • build strong networks within your chosen profession.
