Multi factor authentication (MFA) and passkey help

Multi-factor authentication (MFA) and passkeys make it harder for someone else to access your online accounts. They:

• lower the risk of identity theft
• keep your personal information safe
• make logging in easier and more secure.

Passkeys let you log in using your phone or computer as a secure key. You can use a passkey instead of a password and an MFA code.

MFA asks you to prove who you are by both:

• entering a password
• entering a code sent to your phone.

This helps keep your account safe, even if someone gets your password or uses it in a phishing scam.

MFA and passkey setup guide

The Publications Portal and Open Data Portal login pages provide two login methods:

1. Log in with your Digital ID using single sign-on (SSO)
   If you normally use SSO, continue using this option.
2. Standard username and password login
   If you log in with your username and password, you will need to configure MFA or options will be available to you once you login.

Setting up a passkey (recommended)

Step 1: Go to your passkey settings

1. Log in to the Publications Portal or Open Data Portal using your username and password.
2. Open your user profile.
3. Select Manage Passkeys.
4. Select Register a Passkey.

Step 2: Choose a passkey method

You will see two options:

1. mobile device–iPhone, iPad or Android devices
2. security key.

Option A: Mobile device (recommended)

1. Select iPhone, iPad or Android device.
2. Scan the QR code using your mobile device.
3. Follow the prompts on your device.
4. Verify your identity using face ID, fingerprint or device PIN.
5. Wait for the confirmation message.

Your passkey has been registered.

Option B: Security key

1. Enter your security key into your computer.
2. Select Security key.
3. Follow the browser prompts.
4. Touch or activate the key when requested.

Your passkey has been registered.

Step 3: Testing your passkey

Once your passkey has been added:

1. log out of the portal
2. return to the login page
3. select Sign in with a passkey
4. complete the authentication prompt.

If successful, you will be logged in without entering a password.

Step 4: Managing existing passkeys

You can view, add or remove passkeys from the Passkey Management page in your profile. The portal provides a Passkey List page to manage registered passkeys.

Setting Up MFA (two-step verification)

1. Log into the Publications Portal or Open Data Portal using your username and password.
2. Open your user profile.
3. Select Manage MFA settings.
4. Choose Manage Two-Factor Authentication (2FA).
5. Scan the QR code using your preferred authenticator application, such as Microsoft Authenticator or Google Authenticator.
6. Enter the verification code generated by the app.
7. Select Verify.
8. MFA is now enabled on your account.
