Value-based healthcare

We want all Queenslanders to have access to the right care, at the right place, at the right time

To achieve this, value-based healthcare initiatives will be delivered as part of our current Strategic Plan (PDF, 2MB).

We aim to reduce low value care – care that delivers little or no health benefit to our patients for an investment of resources. We’ll then transition to a value-based healthcare system. Shared decision making is an important part of this journey.

We plan to make shared decision making successful

We'll do this by:

  • making preparation a normal part of your pre-healthcare appointment routine so you and your healthcare professional make the most of your time together
  • making shared decision part of every healthcare appointment and at each stage of your treatment
  • encouraging you to provide feedback on your healthcare experience so we can get better at working with you.

We’re looking at ways to improve shared decision making for both you and health professionals. We’ll publish any new information or resources on the Queensland Health website.

Case study

Supporting Asha and her mum

Asha’s supporting her elderly mum as she has treatment for cancer. She goes to every appointment with her because her mum doesn’t speak English and needs Asha to translate for her. It’s difficult for Asha as she’s a casual worker and her job isn’t very flexible. She talks to her mum’s specialist about some of the challenges she’s having, including having to take unpaid time off and juggling her work commitments.

By talking her mum’s specialist, Asha now has a couple of suggestions that may help her, including using the hospital’s interpreter services so she doesn’t have to go to every appointment. Her mum may also be able to use telehealth for her appointments.
