Formula feeding

Choosing the right formula for your baby.

Using formula

You can use formula on its own or do mixed feeding. This is where you may breastfeed for some feeds and use formula for others. Formula has the right amount of nutrition your baby needs to grow, including protein, fats, vitamins and minerals.

Your baby must have formula or breastmilk until they're 12 months old. Healthy babies who are eating solids don't need toddler formula. After 12 months they can have cows or goats milk if needed. Don’t give your baby water or any other food until they’re over 6 months.

Which formula is right for your baby

Cows milk-based formula is best for most babies. Only use soy or goats milk formula if your GP or another health professional tells you to.

It’s better to choose a formula with a lower protein level as these lower the risk of obesity later in childhood. You don’t need to switch to a follow on or step 2 formula for babies between 6 and 12 months old. There's no evidence of any health or nutrition benefits by switching to this milk.

Talk to your GP, child health nurse or dietitian if you're worried about your baby’s feeding or nutrition. They can also help if you’re not sure which formula is right for your baby.

Feeding your baby

Holding your baby while you're giving them a bottle helps you bond, as they can feel, smell and see you.

It's also important that you don’t leave your baby alone to drink a bottle, as this can cause choking.
