Why networking is important
Women working in male-dominated or non-traditional fields can sometimes feel isolated and unable to access information and support that’s right for them.
To address this challenge, women working across a range of industries have created more than 40 ‘Women In’ networks across multiple industries in Queensland.
These networks provide women with an opportunity to connect to other women, access mentoring and career development pathways, and advocate on issues impacting them.
What is networking?
Networking is about building mutually beneficial relationships over time.
Good networking has a basis of trust and support, and can mean the difference between a mediocre or phenomenal career.
‘Women In’ networks typically have 3 main functions.
- To connect and support women in industry.
- To provide professional development and mentoring opportunities.
- To advocate for and raise of the profile of women's leadership.
Reasons to join a network
In starting to think about joining a network, it can be helpful to consider what you aim to achieve and gain from joining, and also what you would be able to give and share.
Do you want to:
- meet and connect with others in your field?
- seek support to progress your career?
- contribute to change for other women in your field?
Reaching out to current network members, or talking with others in your workplace or industry, is a great way to learn from their experience. It is helpful to be clear about your expectations, but to also be open to new ideas and opportunities to ensure you get the most out of what may be on offer.
Having a clear idea about what you hope to gain from a network can assist network organisers to identify the programs, events and opportunities you find most valuable.
