The journey to 2032

Since being awarded Brisbane 2032, there has been considerable foundational work behind the scenes to ensure the Games are set for success.

The bid phase

It all started in 2015 when the South East Queensland Council of Mayors started investigating a regional Olympic and Paralympic Games proposal to accelerate infrastructure investment, boost jobs and attract tourism.

The Queensland Government established the Brisbane 2032 Taskforce in July 2019 to determine the merits of hosting the Games and five months later all levels of government were united behind a collaborative effort to try to become the newest Olympic city.

The Brisbane 2032 Taskforce worked alongside the Australian Olympic Committee, Paralympics Australia, other government agencies and the IOC Future Host Commission to prepare the application.

In February 2021 Queensland entered into targeted dialogue with the IOC and was granted ‘preferred host’ status, before making a final submission to the IOC in May 2021.

The Future Host Commission recommended to the IOC Executive Board that Brisbane’s proposal be put to a vote, which was set down for 21 July 2021. The IOC members voted in favour of Brisbane being awarded hosting rights for the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
