After-hours medical help and advice
13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84)
13 HEALTH (13 43 25 84) is a phone service available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week (cost of a local call) for all Queenslanders seeking advice about their health or information about health services.
Qualified health staff can give you advice on symptoms and conditions, and if needed who to talk to and how quickly you should act. The advice is confidential, professional and supportive.
13 HEALTH provides qualified health advice—it is not a diagnostic service and should not replace medical consultation. In an emergency always dial Triple Zero (000).
Ambulance
The Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS) provides emergency medical helpf, treatment and transport through a network of 260 ambulance stations across the state.
Ambulance phone numbers
- In an emergency, call Triple Zero (000) and ask for 'ambulance'.
- If it's not an emergency, call 13 12 33 to ask for an ambulance. Non-emergencies generally require a doctor's authorisation to arrange the ambulance transport.
Hospital emergency departments
Queensland emergency departments are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. They provide quality emergency care to seriously injured or ill people who need immediate medical treatment.
Qualified doctors and nurses are on duty or, in some rural hospitals on immediate call, to help with medical emergencies.
You don’t need an appointment to go to an emergency department.
Emergency medical treatment is free to Medicare card holders at Queensland Health hospitals. Charges apply to patients without a current Medicare card.
Visitors from countries with a Reciprocal Health Agreement with Australia will receive free emergency medical care with proof of citizenship (i.e. a passport). You will pay for services if you attend the emergency department of a private hospital.
