Evacuation centres
In a disaster, information about public cyclone shelters and evacuation centres will be broadcast to the community via local ABC radio broadcasts and other media.
Listen to your radio or contact your local council to find out where the shelters are located.
Evacuation centres
Evacuation centres give temporary refuge for people evacuated from homes in the vicinity of the disaster and for people who are travelling through the affected area but can't continue.
The evacuation centres provide people affected by disaster with:
- food
- clothing
- blankets
- shelter
- personal support
- Australian Red Cross registries.
Public cyclone shelters
Public cyclone shelters give refuge to a large number of people during a severe tropical cyclone.
Shelters are located on high ground above the storm tide height and made to withstand wind and debris.
In the event of a cyclone, the best and safest place is usually your own home, or that of a friend or relative.
