Student support
You should identify any special support requirements a student may have before they start their course. They may need particular services to successfully complete it.
There are standards that define registered training organisations' (RTO) responsibilities in relation to access and equity, and associated management systems.
See the Standards for National VET Regulator (NVR) Registered Training Organisations 2011:
- Part 2 (initial registration)—standards 5 and 6
- Part 3 (continuing registration)—standards 16 and 17.
Read a 'comparative analysis' of the VET Quality Framework and the Australian Quality Training Framework standards.
Language, literacy and numeracy support
The Australian Government offers 3 programs to support adults with the development of language, literacy and numeracy skills:
- Workplace English Language and Literacy Program—funding is available for combined language, literacy and vocational training.
- Language, Literacy and Numeracy Program—provides training for eligible people whose skills are below the level considered necessary to secure sustainable employment or pursue further education and training.
- Adult Migrant English Program—provides free English language courses to eligible migrants and humanitarian entrants.
Students with disability
Under the Australian Government's Disability Discrimination Act 1992, you must ensure, as far as practical, that people with disability are treated equally to the rest of the community.
The guidelines for making reasonable adjustment for learners with a disability will help you meet your obligations.
Vocational Education and Training Disability Support Service (VDSS)
The VDSS helps public and private RTOs to support eligible learners with a disability.
To be eligible, RTOs must receive funding from the Department of Education, Training and Employment. There is no charge to you or the student to use this service.
The VDSS provides:
- assistive technology (equipment and/or software), and training in its use for learners and RTO staff
- support people for learners (such as Auslan interpreters or note takers)
- assessment of learner educational support needs.
Support is based on individual requirements and will vary.
