Curriculum
Queensland is transitioning to the Australian Curriculum. The Australian Curriculum describes what students are expected to learn in each year of schooling. It is being developed over several years.
The Queensland Curriculum will continue to be taught in some subjects until the Australian Curriculum is completed.
The Australian Curriculum
Years 11 and 12
The Australian Curriculum is yet to be released for Years 11 and 12. The Queensland Curriculum will continue to be taught.
Prep to Year 10
In 2012, Queensland schools are teaching the Australian Curriculum in:
- English
- mathematics
- science.
In 2013, Queensland schools will also teach the Australian Curriculum in history. The Queensland curriculum remains in place for all other subjects.

Learning across subjects
Students will be taught 7 general capabilities within the Australian Curriculum:
- literacy
- numeracy
- information and communication technology
- critical and creative thinking
- ethical behaviour
- personal and social
- inter-cultural understanding.
The Australian Curriculum also has 3 cross-curriculum priorities that will shape student learning:
- Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures
- Asia and Australia's engagement with Asia
- sustainability.
The Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority is responsible for developing a national curriculum.
