Social and emotional support

Schools provide supportive environments for students and families who may be dealing with emotional issues, or social or mental health problems.

Talk to your school first about what help is available.

Guidance officers

Guidance officers provide short term counselling services to students and their families at all Queensland state schools.

They can help with:

  • identifying barriers to learning
  • personal and social development
  • diverse learning needs
  • educational and career pathways.

Contact your school to arrange a meeting with your guidance officer.

Chaplaincy services

Some Queensland schools have a chaplaincy service—this is separate to a religious instruction program. Chaplains provide support for students and they can be an additional adult role model in the school.

All religious, spiritual and non-religious beliefs are respected and involvement is voluntary.

Youth support coordinator initiative

This program aims to support young people who are disengaging from learning. Often, these are people who have been suspended or excluded from school, or have a record of truancy.

Youth support coordinators are employed by community organisations but are located in schools to work with students and their families. They can:

  • support students in their senior years as they transition to further education, training and employment
  • refer students and provide information about broader community services and resources.

School-based Youth Health Nurse Program

All state secondary students, their parents and the school community may access the nurse for confidential consultations regarding the health and wellbeing of young people.
