Behaviour management

All Queensland state schools must follow the Code of School Behaviour—a standard for providing safe, supported and disciplined learning environments.

Based on the code, each school creates its own responsible behaviour plan for students. The plans are created in consultation with the school community and outline the school's approach to supporting positive behaviour, and dealing with unacceptable behaviour.

The plan should be on your school's website.

Read more about responsible behaviour plans.

Suspension, exclusion and cancellation of enrolment (disciplinary absences)

There are different types of disciplinary absences, depending on the seriousness of the behaviour and the individual circumstances involved. All decision making around suspension or exclusion is carefully considered so that all parties are represented fairly.

Principals can impose:

  • suspension for 1–20 days
  • exclusion
  • cancellation of enrolment (for post-compulsory school age students only).

When a student is suspended, the school is responsible for making sure the student has school work to complete, or can access an educational program.

Fact sheets about the processes for exclusion are available for parents, students and principals.
