Changing your apprenticeship or traineeship
To change your apprenticeship or traineeship you will need to make changes to your training contract.
Contract changes are always lodged with the Department of Education, Training and Employment. The form used to make the change will have details of who to send it to.
Training contract advice
Your first point of contact for any issues regarding your training contract is Apprenticeships Info. They can be contacted on 1800 210 210 or email your query to apprenticeshipsinfo@qld.gov.au.
Some of the common issues that apprentices and trainees come across are outlined below for your quick reference.
Changing employers
You may move from one employer to another if all parties agree. First, your employer will need to cancel your current training contract.
Read about cancellation of training contracts (mutual agreement).
If your new training contract is for the same apprenticeship or traineeship, you may be given credit for previous service or experience under recognition of prior learning.
Changing your supervising registered training organisation
You and your employer can agree to change supervising registered training organisations (SRTOs).
Your employer must advise the SRTO in writing that they are to be replaced, including the date of replacement (which can be no sooner than 14 days after the date written notice is given). Your employer must also advise us using the change of training organisation form.
The SRTO being replaced must give you a statement of attainment to confirm the training you have already completed on or before the replacement date.
Your new SRTO will then need to create a new training plan with you and your employer.
Extending your probationary period
As a general rule, the probationary period for all apprenticeships is 90 days, and 30 days for all traineeships. You may apply for an extension in some circumstances.
Read about probationary periods.
Extending your training contract
If the nominal term of your training contract is due to end before all your training is complete, you and your employer (and your parent or guardian if you are under 18) can apply for an extension.
Cancelling your training contract
The training contract between you and your employer is legally binding.
Cancelling your training contract should be your last option, after you have attempted to resolve the issues that threaten the continuation of your training.
See cancelling your training contract.
