Queensland Digital Identity

Your Queensland Digital Identity is how we establish that you are who you say you are, when you use the Digital Licence app. It's one of the ways we keep your private information safe and secure for your Digital Licence.

On this page:

Why you need a Queensland Digital Identity

When you first download and onboard with the Digital Licence app, you need to create a Queensland Digital Identity (QDI). This is different to a QGOV account (if you have one) which can't be used with the app.

Your Queensland Digital Identity is highly assured, and unique to you, and you should never share your login details with anyone. If anyone attempts to use your Queensland Digital Identity they would need to know your email address, your password, and have possession of your mobile phone.

Before you create a Queensland Digital Identity

You will need to complete all of the steps to successfully create and verify your Queensland Digital Identity required for the Digital Licence.

You can pause and return at a later time to finish the sign up process, the app will save your progress but you need to select Login when you return.

We recommend you complete the Queensland Digital Identity signup process in a single session to comply with best practice around security.

If you experience issues creating or logging in to your Queensland Digital Identity, refer to the troubleshooting section for assistance.

How to create a Queensland Digital Identity

Queensland Digital Identity instructions on the first screen in the Digital Licence app

To create a Queensland Digital Identity, you will go through a series of steps within the app. Once you have finished these steps, your Queensland Digital Identity is ready to go, and you will be able to continue onboarding to the Digital Licence app.

Open the Digital Licence app to be taken to the Queensland Digital Identity webpage to Login or Sign up.

If you have not accessed the set up process for the Digital Licence app previously, you will need to select Sign up. However, if you have begun this process before, even if you did not complete it, you will need to select Login.

We currently only use your Queensland Digital Identity to access the Digital Licence app. If you have another identity account, such as a MyGov or Queensland Government account, you cannot use that to login to the Digital Licence app.

Step 1: Provide your email address and create a password

The email address must be an email that you have access to–it can't be shared and used for another Queensland Digital Identity. If you share an email address with someone, you will need to use a separate email address.

Create a password that must be at least 8 characters in length, and contain 3 of the following:

  • lower-case letter (a–z)
  • upper-case letter (A–Z)
  • number (0-9)
  • special character (!@#$%^&*).

Step 2: Read and accept the terms and conditions, and privacy notice

These will tell you how we will collect your information, and what it will be used for. They are available online if you wish to re-read them later.

Step 3: Verify your email address

We will send a validation code to the email address you provided in Step 1. You will need to enter the code to continue. The code will expire after 3 minutes but you can request another code if it expires.

If you do not receive the email, check your Junk or Spam folders first, or request another validation code email to be sent through the Resend the validation email link on the app screen.

Step 4: Set up multi-factor authentication

Multi-factor authentication is required for your Queensland Digital Identity as an extra layer of protection.

Multi-factor authentication means that each time you use your Queensland Digital Identity email address and password to log in, we will check that it is really you, by sending a code to your mobile device. To set up multi-factor authentication, enter your Australian mobile phone number. You will be sent a code via SMS to enter into the app which will verify your multi-factor authentication.

Step 5: Verify your identity

You need to provide information from certain credentials which we will use to verify your identity. If the names on your credentials don't match, you will need to provide evidence of the name change in Step 5.

The information must be entered exactly as it appears on each credential. If the information is not entered correctly the verification will fail. You have up to 5 attempts to enter the information correctly otherwise you will need to close the app and login to try again.

You need to provide one credential from the first group, and one credential from the second group in the following table.

First credential Second credential

If you have an Adult Proof-of-Age card which has not expired, you will still be able to sign up for a Queensland Digital Identity (QDI), using the details from your Adult Proof-of-Age card.

The information you provide while verifying your identity will be kept safe and secure, and protected by best practice security measures. We only retain the minimum information needed by us in order to establish your Queensland Digital Identity and keep it secure.

Provide evidence of your name change, if required

This step is if you have changed your name through marriage or a change of name certificate, and the credentials you need to provide don’t match. Continue to Step 6 if you don’t need to do this step.

If you changed your name you will be asked to enter details from your Australian marriage or change of name certificate.

You will need to contact us to continue if you changed your name by any other method.

You only need to complete this process of setting up your Queensland Digital Identity once – the next time you are asked for your Queensland Digital Identity, you can log in using your email address, password, and multi-factor authentication.

While setting up a Queensland Digital Identity, you may be asked if you want to set up a Passkey. A Passkey is a method used to authenticate you, as an alternative to a password or PIN. It is a highly secure method of signing in to a service or site, using your face scan or fingerprint touch, as you would to sign in to the device itself. The Passkey can be stored on your phone or on a separate device or drive.

Regardless of whether you choose to use Passkey or not, you will still be able to create a Queensland Digital Identity.

If you didn't complete the sign up process, the login process will recognise where you got up to and take you where you need to continue the process of creating your Queensland Digital Identity.

Duration 00:03:15

To get started with the Digital Licence app you will first need to download it. Once the app is downloaded the next step is to open it. Now it's time to create your Queensland Digital Identity.

A message will appear asking to use the TMR website to sign in - tap to Continue.

When you set up your Queensland Digital Identity through the online portal, the details you provide from your identity documents will be verified against the issuing authority's records, ensuring all details match

This helps protect your private information, keeping it safe and secure

To get a Queensland Digital Identity you will need to provide some forms of identification, such as your driver licence, birth certificate or passport. You will be asked to read and agree to the Queensland Digital Identity Terms and Conditions and Privacy Statement.

Like many other digital accounts you'll need to provide a unique email address which is only accessed by you, then secure your account with a password. Make sure only you have access to this email address and it is not a shared account. This email address and password will be your login for your Queensland Digital Identity.

You will receive an email containing a six digit code to the email address you provided. Enter the code here then press Continue.

You will now need to enter your information from your identity documents. This information needs to be entered exactly as it appears on those documents. If the names on your document do not match, for example your driver licence is in your married name while your birth certificate is in your maiden name, you will need to provide a linking document such as your marriage certificate.

Follow the prompts on screen to verify your identity.

Finally you will be asked to secure your account by providing an Australian mobile number. Setting up multi-factor authentication helps you protect and secure your Queensland Digital Identity. You will need to use multi-factor authentication when adding the Digital Licence app to another phone.

Enter your mobile number then tap Continue. You will receive a one-time code sent to the mobile number you provided. Enter the code here then tap Continue.

You're almost there. A recovery code will be displayed on your device - you will need this if you ever need to log in without the phone you used to set up multi-factor authentication so you will need to make a copy and keep it in a safe place.  Tap the Copy Code button and save it securely, then tap Continue.

By using the Digital Licence you will reduce your paper-based mail. You will be presented with screen prompts to set up your e-notices and e-reminders. If you have already done this with TMR you're good to go.

The app will ask you to accept the Terms and Conditions and create a six-digit PIN to securely access the app. Keep this PIN secure - you will need this anytime you access the app. Then re-enter your PIN to confirm.

The first time your credentials are issued it can take a few minutes. Once this is completed, you have now successfully set up your Digital Licence and you are ready to begin using it.
