Where you might have your baby

You might plan to give birth in a hospital so you're close to medical care and have more pain relief options. Or you might prefer a birth centre or home birth for a more relaxed and comfortable experience.

Your options might also depend on where you live and the type of maternity care you choose.

Hospital birth

Women usually plan to give birth in hospital so they’re close to medical and emergency care if they need it.

Birth centres

Birth centres are for women with low risk pregnancies and focus on natural birth. Most care is provided by midwives.

Home birth

Having a home birth is safe if you are supported by midwives, have a low risk pregnancy, and you and your baby are healthy.

Supporting pregnancy for First Nations mums and bubs

If you or your baby identifies as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander, you can get maternity care that's focused on making sure you feel culturally safe and supported.

Making a birth plan

A birth plan is where you write down your preferences for your labour and birth. Find out what you could include in your birth plan on the Pregnancy, Birth and Baby website.
