Ready, Set, Grow!

Ready, Set, Grow! supports Year 5 and Year 6 students in Queensland as they navigate one of the most significant developmental stages of their lives.

Jointly developed by Queensland Department of Education and Queensland Health, the new program aims to equip children with the knowledge and confidence to understand the physical, emotional and social changes they may experience during puberty.

The program is delivered by trained health professionals and educators.

Key features of the program

  • Inclusive and accessible: The program is built on principles of inclusion, accessibility and respect, ensuring it meets the needs of students.
  • Stakeholder engagement: Consultation and feedback from parents, students and experts in health education, child development and cultural engagement have shaped the program’s design and delivery approach.
  • Age-appropriate content: The program provides universal, age-appropriate content and resources tailored to the developmental needs of Year 5 and Year 6 students.
  • Curriculum compatibility: The program aligns with the Australian curriculum (Health and Physical Education – Version 9).

What students will learn

  • Puberty, growth and body changes: understanding why puberty happens, what changes occur in bodies and brains, and learning that people go through these changes at different times and in different ways
  • Periods: clear information about menstrual cycles, how to confidently manage periods and how to support others
  • Body care, hygiene and self-management: practical ways to take care of a changing body, including hygiene, staying comfortable and knowing when and how to ask for help.
  • Emotions, hormones and brain development: learning to understand emotions, how the brain changes during puberty, and practising healthy ways to manage feelings and take care of yourself.
  • Boundaries, communication, and social support: learning about personal boundaries, respectful communication, checking in with others, and knowing when and how to find support.
  • Confidence, and becoming yourself: exploring personal strengths and values, building resilience, and supporting diversity and transition into teenage years.

Feedback

Ready, Set, Grow! will be implemented in stages to determine its effectiveness and opportunities for improvement.

Feedback will be sought from staff, students, parents, and caregivers of participating schools to ensure a comprehensive review. This process has been approved by the Children’s Health Queensland Human Research Ethics Committee (Ethics Approval #124252) and the Queensland Education Research Inventory (QERI Application #55/27/3120).
