Expression of interest: legal practitioners
Expressions of interest are invited from Australian legal practitioners with experience in working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to provide independent legal advice to claimants under the Reparations Scheme. Successful applicants will be included on a referral list and will be engaged by Reparations Scheme claimants as required.
In the spirit of reconciliation, the Queensland Government has made an offer to people whose lives were affected by past government policies which resulted in controls being exercised over the wages and savings of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.
Eligible claimants who accept the offer are required to release the state from further claims in accordance with a Deed of Agreement. The Deed requires each claimant to acknowledge and agree that they have received, prior to executing the Deed, independent legal advice.
The Department of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Partnerships (DATSIP) is establishing a list of available and suitable Australian legal practitioners to provide independent legal advice at no cost to eligible claimants under the Reparations Scheme. DATSIP will pay a fixed fee for each consultation completed by each lawyer selected to provide legal advice to eligible claimants on the Deed of Agreement.
The Reparations Scheme commenced in December 2015 and will conclude in 2018. We encourage you to express your interest as soon as possible as the scheme has already commenced and eligible claimants are currently being identified.
You need to be registered on our list to receive payment for advice provided to claimants under this scheme.
