Grow It Local

In 2023, the Queensland Government partnered with Grow It Local by investing $150,000 over 3 years to support the initiative’s rollout in Queensland. Grow It Local brings together communities to connect through growing, sharing and eating locally grown food. Impact reporting has indicated that engaging in growing your own food at home has cascading benefits reaching far beyond the garden, with gardeners experiencing positive health and wellbeing outcomes, greater connection to community and increased connection and care for the environment. This can be seen by the Grow It Local members, the majority of which have indicated that they have a greater appreciation for food and therefore make an effort to waste less.

Members of Grow It Local have access to free workshops, a platform to connect with other growers, and participation in a national seed service that supports members to grow and cook seasonal produce. Workshops are also offered to support composting and worm farms at home to recycle food and garden material, helping to divert this from landfill and return valuable nutrients back to the garden.

The partnership with Grow It Local supported the Queensland Government’s action on organics as a priority waste.
