Wakka Wakka rangers work on Wakka Wakka Country. Their key Traditional Owner partners include the Wakka Wakka Native Title Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC, the Bunya Working Group  and the Cherbourg Aboriginal Shire Council. The ranger team based from Murgon strengthens connections between the important work in the Bunyas with Country and communities throughout the South Burnett Region.

Wakka Wakka rangers’ priorities include:

  • on-Country assessments using the Firesticks monitoring app; weed and pest surveys, and cultural heritage surveys in conjunction with the Bunya Consortium for management of the Cherbourg area
  • weed management focusing on lantana and invasive acacias in open woodlands, and parthenium in woodlands and grasslands; rightfire practice; feral animal monitoring and control
  • protection of Gnuyeeree Juwoon Rock art site and Coomba Falls in Maidenwell involving weed control; rightfire practice, infrastructure development and fencing to keep out unauthorised cattle grazing
  • rightfire activities with the Regional Fire Practitioner Network and the young people at the Silver Linings School
  • establishment of a Cherbourg Nursery for plants for the wetland restoration project at Muddy Flats.
