Working with Mona Mona and Kuranda communities, to the Bama Plan, Bulmba rangers apply traditional land management practices to manage Djabugay Country just as their ancestors did. Utilising traditional fire management, as well as protecting wetlands and culturally important places, Bulmba rangers are restoring country, habitat for threatened species, and the spirit of their people.
Key activities of the Bulmba Rangers include:
- flora and fauna biodiversity surveys, including of the Northern Bettong and cassowary, to obtain a better understanding of their status over time
- implementation of the Mona Mona fire management plan, and monitoring of the benefits for fauna
- assisting Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service with planned burns in the Barron Gorge National Park
- weed management in accordance with local operations plans
- installation of exclusion fencing to protect wetlands
- engagement of young people in caring for country activities through local school events
- work with Traditional Owners to record and map the region’s cultural heritage values, names and places with the aim of reviving the Djabugay language
- hosting of the 2020 Queensland Indigenous ranger conference, including field visits to enable rangers from throughout the state to experience Djabugay Country and culture.
