The Gidarjil Gladstone Land and Sea Rangers work in the Port Curtis Coral Coast (PCCC) country, covering the area from Burrum Heads, north to Port Alma. The rangers combine traditional knowledge with western science to manage country and monitor and conserve many threatened species, including dugong and marine turtles. ConocoPhillips has contributed funding to establish the team of rangers, including their equipment and training. This partnership is contributing to the conservation of cultural heritage and biodiversity values in the Gladstone area. Rangers are undertaking work including:
- strategic weed management
- sea country work including seagrass monitoring, fish and crab surveying, mangrove watch and monitoring of marine turtles
- cultural heritage surveys at sites including Curtis Island
- community marine clean-up events and school-based trainee activities
- assisting Gladstone Regional Council with maintenance of Toondoon Botanic Gardens, Toondoon and Tigalee Creeks and the Round Gladstone Trails
- assistance with fire management alongside the Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service.
