Where are crocodiles found?
In Queensland crocodile habitat starts near Gladstone and extends north to the Torres Strait, across Cape York Peninsula and in the Gulf of Carpentaria. Estuarine (saltwater) crocodiles can be found in any waterways and the sea in this area.
While crocodiles can sometimes be found outside of this area, such sightings are rare.
Crocodiles aren’t only found in coastal areas. They can also be found hundreds of kilometres inland in some places.
Within their range, crocodiles can be found in rivers, lagoons, swamps, waterholes, mangroves, estuaries, beaches, coral reefs and the ocean.
Although they are known as saltwater crocodiles they can also live in freshwater. However, they generally prefer spending their time in saltwater environments where there are more sources of food.
To support public safety, crocodile warning signs are used to remind people that crocodiles live in the area. However, the absence of a sign does not mean there are no crocodiles in the area.
