Camping in crocodile habitat areas

When camping in an area near where crocodiles live, the closer you camp to the water, the greater the risk.

  1. Set up camp well away from the water’s edge.
Crocodiles have attacked people in tents pitched too close to the water. If it’s not possible to camp away from the water, choose a spot on top of a high bank that will be difficult for a crocodile to access.
  2. Wash dishes and prepare food well away from the water’s edge.
  3. If you need to collect water, avoid crouching down and never use the same location twice.
The smaller you appear to the crocodile, the more likely it is to see you as potential prey, and crocodiles are excellent at learning repeated behaviours.
